NC State Extension had a strong presence at the 2019 Carolina Feed Industry Association (CFIA) annual meeting in North Myrtle Beach, SC. The meeting was attended by industry members and university faculty.

Gary Huddleston presented federal regulatory updates from the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA). Huddleston shared information on the status of Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) federal inspections and some common findings from facilities inspected to date: pest control programs and qualified individual training, along with current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) inspections are being addressed frequently, while very few hazard analysis and preventive control inspections have taken place. The N.C. Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services feed division has been contracted by the FDA to complete FSMA inspections.

A general agriculture outlook was presented by John R. Bell, IV, House Majority Leader, N.C. House of Representatives, N.C. General Assembly. Representative Bell spoke about the importance of agriculture in North Carolina and the impact of agriculture on the economy.

In addition to industry updates, NC State faculty members Mahmoud Sharara (Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering), Adam Redhead (Animal Food & Nutrition Consortium), Adam Fahrenholz (Prestage Department of Poultry Science) and Jonathan Holt (Animal Science) shared program and departmental updates with attendees. Feed and food safety topics included Sharara discussing the use of poultry litter as an energy source, Redhead encouraging membership in the NC State Animal Food & Nutrition Consortium (AFNC) and Holt giving updates from the Animal Science department, including current undergraduate and graduate enrollment.

Adam Fahrenholz gave a feed milling program update, highlighting students currently pursuing internships in the feed industry and new technologies being integrated into classes. After introducing Marissa Herchler, Area Specialized Agent – Animal Food Safety for North Carolina, Fahrenholz and Herchler talked to members about Extension animal food safety efforts. They distributed cards with program information (feed milling and animal food safety), links to the NC State virtual feed mill tour and feed mill website and contact information.
